Kaukokiito opens a terminal in LogiCity

20.04.2010

Kaukokiito’s LogiCity cargo terminal opened for business on 19th April 2010. The new terminal offers 14,300 square metres of temperature-regulated space with planning permission for a full area of 30,000 square metres.

Kaukokiito has a total of 29 terminals in Finland and the state-of-the-art facility in Turku is the second largest after Vantaa. The new Turku terminal employs 50 people and is served by dozens of transport companies.

Jussi Sipilä, Managing Director of Kaukokiito, explains why the company chose to locate its new terminal in LogiCity. “We set out to find a solution where all aspects would meet both our current and future needs to the greatest possible extent. It’s of primary importance that the terminal is located in the immediate vicinity of good road connections and is at the same time outside the scope of city-centre traffic jams.

Lorry traffic also requires enough space to manoeuvre. The nature of our operations also makes it important that we are sited far enough away from residential areas, have ports in close proximity and rail and air access available.

LogiCity offers us all of these things. As the site also allows for swift expansion, this major investment decision will carry us far into the future so that we can provide our customers in Southwest Finland with fast-moving efficient services.”

Mr Sipilä stresses that Kaukokiito considers it important from an environmental perspective that heavy vehicles keep away from urban areas and smaller vehicles with a lower carbon footprint circulate in residential areas.
