Development of LogiCity to be transferred to Turku Municipal Property Corporation
The ongoing development of the Turku Airport area, otherwise known as LogiCity, is set to be transferred from Pilot Turku Ltd to the Turku Municipal Property Corporation now that Pilot Turku has fulfilled its mandate. The area’s development will progress to the kind of practical implementation for which Pilot Turku Ltd does not possess sufficient resources.
Pilot Turku Ltd has been responsible for LogiCity’s development and marketing, and has in addition participated in the provision of company relocation services, policy development concerning Turku’s logistics profile, and in air traffic development. The company has established the LogiCity brand and created a concept for the area’s further development. Zoning for the south side of the Airport is complete and is being implemented for the north side, so the area is fast becoming one of the largest logistics hubs in Finland. Pilot Turku’s key goals have indeed been met.
Operations under the LogiCity brand will now be closely linked to construction and property development, as well as to the practical implementation of agreed subjects for further development which will be conducted in a business-driven fashion. These aspects relate to the development of a new kind of labour concept, the utilisation of remote identification, and the enhancement of logistics processes concerning air cargo and the assembly industry.
Since Pilot Turku Ltd lacks the resources to implement this project in full, the supervision of property development and implementation of matters for further advancement will be assigned to Turku Municipal Property Corporation, which is responsible for the development of land owned by the City of Turku and implementation of the required infrastructure.
Turku Municipal Property Corporation is drawing up a proposal for the City Board during spring 2010 on company-driven implementation of the LogiCity area, complete with competitive tender documentation.
Remaining operations currently under the aegis of Pilot Turku Ltd will be transferred to other City of Turku units as finalised by the end of March. It was agreed in advance with Ari Niemelä, Managing Director of Pilot Turku Ltd, that his period of service will end on 1st July 2010.
“One of Pilot Turku’s key goals was to prepare the outcomes of our development work for the kind of practical implementation that requires extensive and diverse expertise, especially in the fields of property development and construction. The transition is a natural and vital step moving forward to the next, company-driven stage in accordance with the process of change initiated in 2008. It will be marvellous to see our work come to fruition in the years that lie ahead,” Mr Niemelä commented.
