Hungarian budget airline Wizz Air starting scheduled flights from Turku

20.12.2007Printable version

Wizz Air is the biggest budget airline in Central and Eastern Europe, the first to offer low cost services at Turku Airport, and is due to commence scheduled flights from Turku to Gdansk, Poland.

The first flights will take off on 2nd April 2008 operating twice a week to begin with. One-way fares start from as low as € 19.99 all inclusive.

Wizz Air operates a young fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft from six bases on close to 100 routes. The airline offers flights to and from Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania, carrying over 4 million passengers in 2007.

Starting scheduled flights has become a reality thanks to Finavia’s introduction of the low cost concept at Turku Airport. The previous and for now empty maintenance building will be converted into a passenger terminal with the capacity to handle 10–12 slots every day.

Pilot Turku takes the initiative

In its role as co-ordinator of the Turku Region logistics cluster, Pilot Turku Ltd commenced a passenger flight traffic development project in 2006. Project Manager Pekka Jaakkola was hired to investigate and co-ordinate passenger flight traffic at Turku Airport. A new scheduled route and the entry of an international player shows that the initiative was indeed necessary and has yielded results.

From the perspective of Southwest Finland’s industrial policy development, the new route is highly significant and especially so to the region’s larger companies. It’s good for business travellers and improves labour mobility. The tourist industry will also benefit from fresh opportunities to develop and market new tourism products. The route further contributes to Turku’s position as the European Capital of Culture in 2011.
