Port of Naantali expansion increases transport volumes

03.08.2007

The Port of Naantali’s new quay and expanded outdoor storage area have significantly boosted transport volumes. The enhanced port area has guaranteed that a greater number of vessels can be moored at any point, while the increased storage area ensures a larger volume of goods can be handled.

“Unitised cargo transports have increased in particular. The number of trucks and trailers passing through the Port of Naantali has already risen by 25,000, representing a growth of 19 per cent,” says Yrjö Vainiala, Port Director. “The expansions secure continuity for the present level of traffic and allow for the generation of new business,” Mr Vainiala states.

The Port of Naantali is the third largest in Finland after Helsinki and Kotka. Vessel calls are running at an annual rate of around 2,000 and the total transport volume is in excess of 7 million tonnes.

Increased transports at Naantali have not decreased business at the Port of Turku, where capacity has also been added in 2007 to meet e.g. the needs of a growing car import operation.

The ports of Turku and Naantali have specialised in terms of transports and complement each other with a combined volume coming close to the estimated annual levels seen at Helsinki’s Vuosaari Harbour.
