TNT makes Turku its air cargo hub

Taking it all to Turku

International express delivery operator TNT made Turku airport the focus for its Finnish flights at the beginning of September 2008. Overland transports between Turku and Helsinki, and Turku and inland Finland and the west coast will also increase.

Swift growth at Turku Airport

Express delivery traffic worldwide has grown significantly throughout this decade, and the volume of goods carried by TNT via Turku has almost doubled in four years. TNT began flying express cargo to Turku in 2004 and new terminal facilities were built at the airport to meet the company’s specific needs. TNT introduced a new, larger cargo plane on the Turku route in 2006. Concentrating air cargo operations in Turku also means using larger planes and a Boeing 757 with a capacity of almost 30 tonnes came into service at the beginning of September 2008.

Kaukokiito to relocate in LogiCity

A major logistics company – Suomen Kaukokiito Oy – is relocating in LogiCity. Kaukokiito has reserved a 10 hectare plot where it plans to build a total of 30,000 square metres of facilities for logistics operations. The first stage of construction comprises a temperature-adjusted transport terminal with a floor area of 10,000 square metres.

Kaukokiito explains its significant investment decision in stating that all modes of transport meet in LogiCity and it offers excellent connections, yet the area circumvents the city-centre congestion. Other decisive factors for choosing LogiCity include the fact that the plot offers sufficient space and opportunity for expansion, and the area has clearly been planned with the future in mind where other potential needs are concerned.

“The new terminal will more than double our present capacity and we can offer full-time em-ployment to around 100 logistics experts,” says Jarmo Lilja, Regional Director of Suomen Kaukokiito Oy.

DHL Express cargo flights operating on Turku-Leipzig hub route

DHL Express started daily return flights between LogiCity Turku and DHL’s European Air Hub in Leipzig on September 2008, speeding up shipments for customers located in Western and Central Finland.

“Since the beginning of August 2008 we have routed international road express transport through our new gateway terminal in Turku facilitating a highly significant improvement in road transit times between Finland and other Nordic countries, as well as to and from Continental Europe. This new Turku flight means we can efficiently draw together the pickup and delivery network for both air and road express shipments to benefit our customers,” says Kenneth Palmgren, Managing Director of DHL Express Finland.

Focusing on LogiCity

Customers in Western and Central Finland in particular will benefit from the new service. The late evening departure means customers have the entire working day at their disposal to gather shipments for dispatch. Significantly later pickup schedules will be available as the shipments are no longer transported to the Helsinki flight.
